Thanks to everyone who has made it out already to harvest your trees. I hope everyone is home enjoying the fruits of their labor.

We've got more apples, and more gorgeous weekends ahead. Create new memories, spend some time with us here on the farm and then take a beautiful drive to the Greater New Paltz area where there is a lot going on. You deserve the beauty and the bounty of the Hudson River Valley fall harvest.

Family of New Paltz is experiencing a tremendous need for their services, not only because of rising food prices, but also because of the coming winter, and anticipated fuel costs.
Please help by contributing to Family in any way you can. Money is always good and is greatly appreciated! :) But also, spreading the word about their fund raising events by emailing your friends can really make a difference, particularly if you have a huge email list. Yard Sale for Obama

On Saturday, September 28 beginning at 10am, Alice & Albert Cook of Highland will be hosting a "New Paltz & Vicinity for Obama Good Stuff Yard Sale." This is no ordinary yard sale. There will be food, drink, live music and lots of fun, all to benefit the Obama Campaign.

They are also looking for volunteers to work a shift during the day. Musical Acts are also welcome.

What's Your Story?

On Thursday, September 25 at 7pm, Patty Kane Horrigan will be holding her, "What's Your Story" workshop. Over the course of the evening people will have the chance to discover and explore the central themes of their lives through the use of myth, astrology and fairy tales.

As Patty tells it, "This workshop came out of an astrology project I did this past spring. I advertised locally, asking for people willing to share their life stories with me and a great number responded. The fascinating thing that came out of the "project" was what I heard within the first few moments. Most everyone gave some phrase or description that encapsulated everything else that followed. I don't know if they knew it when it happened - but there it was, the "theme" in their lives and in their charts.
I love the idea of people telling their story so that they can hear for themselves the unique meaning in their lives. It's as if we carry it right on the tip of our tongue, waiting for a chance to be expressed and acknowledged. This workshop will focus on storytelling (as well as astrology). Hopefully, everyone will have begun writing their own fairy tale by the evening's end."

This workshop will be held at The Sanctuary, 5 Academy Street in New Paltz. The cost is $15.

Free Canning Workshop @ Phillies Bridge Farm

Super-duper and totally free, Phillies Bridge Farm is offering a canning workshop at the farm on Thursday evening, September 18th, at 7pm.  If you don't know a thing about preserving foods or if you're new at it and want some pointers, or even if you think you're an old pro and just want to taste the goods from a woman who's canned around the block and gotten some county fair blue ribbons under her belt, check it out.  Spread the word.

Halyna Shepko lives in Gardiner, N.Y. on her Shawangunk Ridge Farm United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary. A cheese maker, spinner, felter, herbalist, Halyna feels it's important to share these traditions to help others connect with nature and themselves. Growing up in a Ukrainian household and daughter to an avid gardener, Halyna remembers sorrel, basswood leaves, comfrey, wild cherries, as all part of her childhood diet. Journeying with herbs all her life with her grandmother, mother and others in the Ukrainian community.


Traveling throughout Europe, Turkey, Ukraine, backpacking across the mountains of Poland and the islands of Greece spending her teen years living in Germany; Halyna has learned and is grateful for what earth provides. Living a more rooted life she produces goat milk soaps, handspun wool, herbal creams, salves and tinctures all made and grown at Shawanunk Ridge Farm. Halyna is also owner of Berehynia Herbals, concentrating on Ukrainian folk healing traditions.

“Eat what you harvest everyday.”

This Saturday's class will concentrate on sumac, purslane, goldenrod and amaranth. We will connect with these plants and learn about their history and uses for food and medicine.

Menu and dishes featuring the plants we collect will be prepared with participants:

goldenrod tea
sumac lemonade

purslane lacto-fermented kimchi
raw potato wild greens salad
vegetarian weedy shishkabobs
local grain and amaranth seed biscuits on a stick with apple filling


Workshop: 9 am to Noon - 3 hours of class and cooking (light lunch included), and a gift of a large bag of Certified Naturally Grown Fresh Picked Cortland Apples from Liberty View Farm. All for only $60.00.

Plein Air Workshop with Les Castellanos

Come and join Hudson Valley painter Les Castellanos in a one day Plein Air workshop. Using nature as an inspiration, learn how to observe, interpret, and paint what you really see. While students will be encouraged to follow and develop their own personal style the groups main focus is to depict the landscape in a representational manner. Learn how to use color, value and lost edges to create atmospheric perspective.

Choose from several different views of the farm; each beautiful; the hills full of apple trees overflowing with fruit full of color the rows look as if they are in Provance, the Veranda where the long arbor full of Wisteria meets the flower garden and Lily Pond, the barn with stone wall foundation and of course the Catskill views.
Enjoy nature and art at Liberty View Farm in the tradition of Innes, Coles, and Frederic Edwin Church.
